The Secret to Supporting Your Teen’s Mental Health: It’s in the Details

A few weeks ago I was in Quebec with my husband on a little holiday. Our youngest was in camp, the dogs were being looked after by the older kids, and it was the perfect opportunity for a getaway.

We had the best time. I love eating on holidays and go all in, usually packing on a few extra pounds but it’s so worth it.

We had the privilege of staying at the most beautiful hotel resort I’ve ever been to.

And you know what made it stand out?

The service. Exceptional, thoughtful, unforgettable service.

One morning, while sipping coffee on our balcony overlooking the lake, I noticed a staff member wiping down every chair in the courtyard with such care and pride. Guests weren’t even out yet but he was pouring himself into the details.

It made me think about how much the details matter in life.

When my teen has been struggling with depression, anxiety, or even suicidal thoughts, the details of how I show up make ALL the difference.

Am I calm and able to respond? Or panicked and reactive?

When my teen walks in the door, what does my energy say before I even speak?

Because here’s the truth: if I’m in panic mode, my teen shuts down faster than a scared turtle retreating into its shell.

But when my presence shows I can handle whatever mental health crisis or issues they’re facing, that’s when connection and trust grow.

That’s what you want with your teen too. 💗

To be the one they know they can come to, no matter what’s going on.
